CHAPTER 11

The Dark Witch narrowed her eyes at me. “This is not over, Shannon. Your pain has just begun.” In an ominous display, she wove a magical shroud around herself, the fabric of reality bending to her will. A veil of supernatural energy enveloped her, and with an unsettling flicker, she vanished from our sight. The air quivered with the remnants of her dark magic, leaving behind an uneasy emptiness.

My heart raced with concern for Indy, fear gripping me as shouts echoed around us. The urgency in the air intensified, and I sprinted toward where Indy had fallen. The supernatural skirmish had taken its toll, and I prayed Indy was alright.

As I reached Indy’s side, the sight of her torn flesh and obvious anguish made bile rise in my throat. Blood stained her black clothing, a stark contrast to the determination still flickering in her eyes. The echoes of shouted commands and the distant clash of weapons formed a dissonant symphony around us, but my focus remained on Indy as Kaine continued to fight the hybrids.

“Hey, honey,” I said soothingly as I pulled back a ripped piece of fabric to inspect the wound.

“Give me a report!” Kaine snapped as he engaged with another hybrid.

Indy hissed as I touched the flesh close to the wound. There was a rotting smell coming from the tear in her flesh and my heartbeat stuttered. “I’m fine jackass. Next time behead the monster; don’t play with it first.”

She didn’t truly blame her brother. They didn’t know what they were fighting, but her willingness to die to protect her brother left no doubt whose life she valued more.

I smiled at her. “Indy, there is some kind of poison in your wound. That creature was venomous. I need to heal you immediately.”

Perspiration beaded her brow. “Yeah, I’m not going to lie. It feels like acid on my skin.”

I gathered my healing power, a wellspring of energy tinged with an ancient knowledge passed down through generations. Focusing on Indy, I channeled the magic, sending it into her wounded shoulder. The air shimmered with the ethereal glow of my healing abilities as the tissue melded together, stitching the torn flesh with delicate precision.

While the wound closed easily, I could feel the dark magic surrounding the poison, the acid coursing through Indy’s veins. Try as I might, my healing power grappled with the malevolent force that lingered, resisting Indy’s restoration. It was a frustrating reminder of the limitations inherent in combating supernatural afflictions, a battle where victory was not always absolute.

“I need Kranston!” I yelled at Kaine.

Those few seconds seemed to stretch for hours before Kranston burst from the front doors of the base and ran toward us. He was incredibly fast, reminding me that while his primary goal was the base healer, he maintained his athletic abilities.

He crouched beside me and Indy, looking at the perfect skin beneath the torn fabric of her uniform. “You have already healed her.”

I shook my head. “There is poison in her bloodstream. I couldn’t purge it.
